Tejemujeres celebrated their 34^th anniversary in 2026. The history of Tejemujeres started in the early 1990’s, a time where knitting was already a widespread tradition and economic activity in the canton of Gualaceo. Artisanal heritage was deeply embedded in the canton and surrounding regions, with each area specializing in its own craft tradition. The women in Gualaceo often combined knitting with other domestic responsibilities and agricultural work. However, despite their skills, they had little control over the commercialisation of their knitted products as they worked with intermediaries who purchased their goods at very low prices and resold them at a considerable profit on national and international markets, leaving the women in economically vulnerable positions.<hier komt de geschiedenis>
